Black Conductors is the 1st collective biography of Black American conductors of instrumental ensembles from the early nineteenth century to the current. Consequently, she solicited assistance from her friend and colleague of more than twenty years, William E. Terry. A special thanks for his collaboration in drafting the correspondence to conductors, designing the Survey Instrument (Appendixes B and C), conducting several interviews, and drafting a few Conductor Profiles. 48 Prelude to Black Conductor Profiles From inception of the idea to prepare this publication, the writer set the following parameters: (1) I was concerned with leaders of Page 23 instrumental ensembles (ten or more players) performing in all genres of music and performing at any variety of venues; (2) living black conductors would help shape their own profiles; and (3) the author would not attempt to engage in classifying conductors as "great," "less great," "on the verge of greatness," "established,'' ''emerging," "promising," or something similar.
